Catherine Street Muscle Theory

A series of three alternative tours of Edinburgh for Edinburgh Art Festival 2015

Each year the festival works with locally based artists, offering unique perspectives of the city through one-off tours. This year, artist and writer Catherine Street will be leading three new tours taking inspiration from The Improbable City.

The Book of Breath & Sound
Saturday, 8 August 2015 from 11:30 to 13:30
Starting from: Festival Kiosk 9 Blair St Edinburgh EH1 1QR
Free but booking essential

Eavesdrop on the Royal Mile, breathe deeply in Skinners Close and listen to the echoes under Regent Bridge as you navigate the city’s soundscape in The Book of Breath and Sound.

This event will require plenty of audience participation, focusing on sound, breathing and meditation techniques.

The Book of Money
Saturday, 15 August 2015 from 11:30 to 13:30
Starting from: Pavement outside 38 Castle Terrace, Edinburgh, EH3 9SJ
Free but booking essential

Explore Edinburgh’s money spaces and ponder the dream of eternal growth as The Book of Money guides you through some of the unusual spaces associated with money in Scotland’s finance capital, including the world’s first Library of Mistakes.

The Book of Shock
Sunday, 30 August 2015 from 11:30 to 13:30
Starting from: Festival Kiosk 9 Blair St Edinburgh EH1 1QR
Free but booking essential

The final tour leads you out of the city as the festival ebbs away. A leisurely amble past Arthur’s Seat and the Duddingston Loch Nature Reserve, The Book of Shock climaxes with a plunge (or paddle!) in the sea.

Thanks & Credits: The Book of Breath & Sound features exercises inspired by SSW’s 2014 Deep Listening workshop with artist Brett Bloom and the Live Art Development Agency’s Stolen Voices workshop with artists Rebecca Collins and Johanna Linsley as well as the Nadine George voice training technique. Thanks also to Liz Murray, Jane Herbstritt, Russell Napier, Simon Thomson, Gillian Findlay, Carol Forrest, Jennifer Williams, Mirja Koponen, Matthew Carey Simos, David Wheatley, Keith Livingstone, Laura Faggetter, Kate Temple, Greg Sinclair, Colm Linnane and The Museum on the Mound for access, help and suggestions for the Book of Money and The Book of Breath & Sound.
